HBR And HASC Honor Houston’s Safety Companies

The Houston Business Roundtable (HBR), with the Houston Area Safety Council (HASC), recently honored the Houston area’s safest contractor companies at the XXV Annual Safety Excellence Awards Banquet. Approximately 1,100 industry representatives from both owner and contractor companies attended the industry event to see 56 awards presented throughout the night. The “Silver Bowl” themed 25th Anniversary of the safety awards banquet recognized 77 nominated contractors with exemplary performance that have been proven to be the “Best of the Best.”

To be considered as a nominee for the Safety Excellence Awards, contractor companies must be nominated by the owner facilities they provide work to in the year prior, 2011. Once nominated, contractor companies must submit to an extensive audit process, with an emphasis focused on interviewing site employees to verify safety, health and environmental policies and procedures have been implemented on the job.

“Best in Category” award winners included Oates Industries Inc., STARCON International, Jacobs Field Services North America, JV Industrial Cos., Wolfenson Electric Inc., Brock Services Ltd., Evergreen Industrial Services, Total Safety, Scope Management Solutions and Mammoet. Other winners included BIC Alliance members Altair Strickland, Aquilex, Atlantic Industrial, Austin Industrial, Brand Energy Solutions, Industrial Gunite, Koch Specialty Plant Services, Mobley Industrial Services, Mourik, Munoz Enterprises, ParFab, TIC Energy & Chemicals, Universal Plant Services, Wood Group and Wyatt Field Service Co.

Bennett Ghormley of Altair Strickland, fondly referred to as the “Safest Man in the World,” and Larry McElroy of Brock Services, known as the “Godfather of Safety,” received Lifetime Achievement Awards during the banquet to recognize their outstanding contributions and unwavering support for the safety industry.

A unique feature of this award process is the requirement the winners participate in a “Best Practices” seminar and present their best practices that led to their excellent achievement. All other companies are encouraged to take these ideas back to their own companies to improve their performance.
